We develop long-term development projects aimed at providing sustainable living for poor communities and survivors of natural disasters as well as providing emergency relief.  We fill many niches and give special emphasis to capacity building, economic empowerment, education, and improving child and women health

Internasional Islamic Youth League IIYL was established since 1991 by students across the World it is one of the leading International Youth Non-Governmental organizations in response to the drought in the Horn of Africa. We are a British international charity that provides help to people who are victims of natural disasters or conflict or suffering from poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, discrimination, homelessness, debt, unemployment, injustice, deprivation or lack of skills and economic opportunities. 

International Islamic Youth League IIYL is a Code of Conduct singletree with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and NGOs in Disaster Relief and accredited to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSCOC) IIYL its member NGO with Union of NGOs of Islamic World. The realization of our vision and mission statement will be achieved through sustained human rights advocacy and networking, humanitarian relief response and disaster management, civic education and governance, public health and sexual reproductive health education, gender and women’s empowerment and environmental and biodiversity protection and justice for social excluded vulnerable groups, communities and people affected by armed conflict and natural disaster and poverty 2.1:

PROGRAMMING

A. ADVOCACY AND NETWORKING:

The International Islamic Youth League will continued engaging with the international community at large thus soliciting resources to promote human rights and justice, specifically for the voiceless and people affected by armed conflict, natural disasters, poverty and hunger. The achievement of these serious challenges required sustained lobby, advocacy and coordination with key actors and building partnership in galvanizing resources; as well as promoting social, economic, cultural and environmental human rights and dignity for the most marginalized, vulnerable and disadvantaged people.

MAIN OBJECTIVE:

Promote international and national advocacy and coordinates positive action and solidarity for the aspiration of people and social, economic and cultural rights for vulnerable people.

EXPECTED RESULTS:

  • Strengthen international and national human rights instruments through lobbying and advocacy including capacity development of stakeholders and beneficiaries;
  • Undertakes advocacy, empowerment and support communities for improved livelihood and survival;
  • Embarks on dissemination and popularization of enacted legislations and/or acts guaranteeing the protection of women, children, disabilities and young people;
  •  Facilitates and organize trainings, seminars, conferences and symposium that promotes political, social, economic and cultural rights of citizens and asylum seekers;
  •  Organizes creativity sessions for showcasing the talents of human rights advocates and defenders;

CHILD SURVIVAL AND DEVELOPMENT:

Sahel African region has one of worst child survival and development indicators in developing countries. While part of this is due to demand side factors, chronic malnutrition, diseases, poor access to quality primary education, child marriage, child labor, abuse, exploitation, family separation, lack of parental, poor healthcare, lack of food and safe drinking water, clothing, shelter, poverty and poor awareness about rights affects their healthy survival and development before reaching 18 years of age

MAIN OBJECTIVE:

Contribute to the implementation of the child rights, welfare, and development in accordance with stakeholders, National policy & Millennium Development Goal indicators.

EXPECTED RESULTS:

  • Undertakes operational research that contributes to policies, strategies, and best practices for improved promotion of child rights, welfare, and development of vulnerable groups through sustained human rights advocacy and program supports;
  • Reducing early child mortality and access to health information at all levels in society through behavioral, change communication, community health education and awareness-raising on danger signs during pregnancies, antenatal and post-natal care visitation, immunization, and exclusive breastfeeding campaign;
  • Increasing knowledge and awareness among community members, especially for the identification of children in search for special needs and protection, tracing, reunification, and reintegration of separated and/or disadvantaged children;
  • Promoting child-friendly environment and good practices thus encouraging their active participation in water, sanitation and hygiene promotion and performing arts and drama;
  • Catering for school sponsorship for extremely vulnerable children in pursuant of their educational dreams and aspiration for higher learning and development;
  • Strengthen the capacity of vulnerable families to understand children’s special situations and assuming shared responsibilities for child survival and development at all levels.

YOUTH EMPOWERMENT AND EMPLOYMENT

Sub Saharan Africa youthful population is about 70% between 18 to 35 years. As young people enter the productive stage to contribute towards economic growth and development, these have serious implication in the labor market, livelihood and better welfare for them. The alienation of young people in holding governance positions in society has been strongly linked to their capacity and responsibility in society. Young people are confronted with numerous challenges ranging from high rate of illiteracy, unqualified, untrained, and unskilled. Their unprecedented condition leading to unemployment, low income wages, and livelihood, social exclusion and drug abuse and societal deprivation at all levels hindering their ability to meet their needs and aspiration in society.

MAIN OBJECTIVE:

To contribute towards the economic and social empowerment of young people in Sierra Leone, especially vulnerable women and girls have increased access to new and existing services to ensure economic protection and increased opportunity to participate in economic growth.

EXPECTED RESULTS:

  • Improving Coordination and collaboration on national advocacy focusing on women’s political and economic rights, specifically improved capacity and empowered women to leadership positions and decision-making bodies;
  • Monitoring and coordination with other actors ensuring that sexual and gender-based violence survivors have improved access to medical, psychosocial support and justice;
  • Increasing knowledge and awareness at a different levels in society about gender issues and contribute towards mainstream it in both private and public entities;
  • Promote life skills and technical and vocational learning for vulnerable women and girls including disabilities

PUBLIC HEALTH AND SEXUAL REPRODUCTIVE EDUCATION

Our operational areas in West Africa Sub Region are among the worst maternal and child health (MCH) indicators in the world, according to the human development index 2010. While tremendously improvement in the health sector has been recognized, however, diseases like malaria, respiratory and diarrhoeal account for the highest death of children in the Sub Region.

MAIN OBJECTIVE:

Improve public health conditions, especially vulnerable women, children, disabilities and communities thus contributing to the reduction of poor health and sanitation in the achievement of the millennium development goal.

  • Increasing knowledge of good hygiene practices among men, women, boys and girls in deprived and vulnerable communities;
  • Involve in the construction and rehabilitation of water and sanitation facilities in vulnerable communities;
  • Promote community awareness on hand washing and sanitation facilities construction and maintenance;
  • Ensuring women of reproductive age and youths have access to reproductive health information enabling them to make informed decision on Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) rights and related actions;
  • Empowering teens using positive deviance approach in the prevention of teenage pregrancy, Human Immino defieicny Virus (HIV/Aids) and Sexually Transmitted (STIs) diseases;

ENVIRONMENTAL AND BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION AND JUSTICE

Rural and deprived communities in West Africa Sub Region are presently faced with problems of environmental degradation, depletion, exploitation, pollution, flood, extinction, etc. arising mainly from increased mining activities, industrial investment, timber logging, bio product agricultural farming, fishing, and land scabbing. The issues of biodiversity and forest losses are challenges for conservationists and immense threats to sustainable development.

MAIN OBJECTIVE:

Advocates for the promotion and conservation of the environment, forest, species, genes (biodiversity) and sustainable development.

EXPECTED RESULTS:

  • Advocates, monitors and improve coordination with stakeholders enhancing environmental and biodiversity conservation;
  • Promote sustainable development, intra and inter-generational equity and social cooperate responsibilities by mining, fishing and industrial companies and businesses;
  • Lobbying and increasing engagement on environmental impact assessment and protection through community awareness raising and dialogue with cooperations and government counterparts;
  • Advocate and lobby for a framework on green economy policies and practices;
  • Promote Eco friendly environment for species and genetic resources;
  • Advocate for human-induced climate change practices and environmental limits;
  •  Work with communities to develop local environmental plan of action

3. HOW WE DO IT?

3.1: HUMAN AND FINANCIAL RESOURCES:

A. HUMAN RESOURCES:

The organization has in place a human resources planning and management policy and procedure that serves as a guiding principle towards recruitment and selection processes including wages remuneration and entitlements. Also, our staffs are given freedom to act and latitude for creative thinking, but they are also held directly responsible for fulfilling their objectives and generating concrete results. All staffs are recruited on rationale of organization’s mandate and values, and this shall be the basis of the individual’s performance of his or her task. IIYL shall recruit competent and flexible personnel irrespective of sex or gender; who can demonstrate willingness and ability to take part in augmenting the organization’s expertise. We proffered high quality training programmes for all new volunteers and personnel are encouraged to upgrade their knowledge and learning skills by means of new task and challenges, post qualifying education, counseling, exchange schemes and network cooperation in relevant field of expertise are encouraged, especially cooperation with research and development institutions. We have also ensured that gender equality and equity, child protection, and staff health, safety and security are embedded in the human resources policy document. IIYL works through volunteers, partnerships and existing community structures in fulfilling its vision and mission statement to achieve desired results. We have a team of experienced and dynamic staffs that are results oriented and highly committed to the ideals and values of humanitarian and development principles and actions. Our main strengths are community volunteers that have been trained, skilled and empowered to provide protection and programme assistance within their communities irrespective of humanitarian and development organizations. Our staffs are bound to respect social norms and values wherever activities are conducted, signed to the staff conduct and obliged signing the international humanitarian code of conducts. We have also maintains an effective and efficient systems and structures towards planning and management of our human and financial resources judiciously in a transparent, accountable and value for money. In this regard, we have established numerous partnerships and networks with Government relevant ministries, departments, agencies, United Nations Agencies, Bi-lateral institutions, international nongovernmental organizations, civil society’s coalitions and networks, research and educational institutions, local authorities and community leaders and beneficiaries. These partnerships and networks have significantly strengthened our organizational capacity and its records of accomplishment to promote change through engaging with a broad stakeholder’s base. We therefore believe addressing the policies and practices of others is vitally important through meetings in which progress updates are provided and getting feedbacks and inputs into our programmes and implementation strategies. This forum has been useful to promote and increase our advocacy activities through participatory approach at strategic level.

Currently staff composition of the organization does not limited to the following core personnel, such as:

The Board of Counselors – it is comprised of. The team of board members is people with diversified experiences in the field of academia, administration, co-operate business, community protection, development and emergency response. The Board is responsible to provide technical and administrative advice to the organization review policies, reports and financial records. Time to time undertakes field visits to projects implementation sites, talk with beneficiaries, and project stakeholders including ensuring timely reports to the donors and relevant government entity. Community stakeholders and other key actors in development are appointing the board after a nomination list has been submitted to a constituted selection committee facilitated by IIYL management team. They are obliged to serve twoyear tenure and could be extended on case-by-case basis. The organization is headed by a Global Chief Executive Officer who is responsible for the overall planning and management of the organizational resources including developing new programmes, ensuring quality project assurance and effective field monitoring and supervision. Liaising with donors and potential ones, ensuring timely donor reporting and provide feedbacks on a regular basis on development and progress of programmes and projects. The Director also ensure that organizational policies and procedures are adhered, implemented and value for money is ensured including staff health, safety and security is guaranteed. The Board can endorse the office of the Global Chief Executive Officer after a satisfactory recruitment selection process. It is expected to serve in that capacity for five years depending on satisfactory performance and could be extended by the board based on outstanding performance. The director ensures the appointment of other staff members through a competitive recruitment process and endorsement by the Board of Counselors. The Director is being assisted by a Programme Manager ensuring new projects development, and effective and efficient execution of projects in the field, monitoring, and supervision and reporting on its progress and bottlenecks. The Finance/Logistics Officer and Assistants supports the implementation of programmes and projects execution ensuring efficient income and expenditure forecasting, cash management and disbursement, financial administrative planning and management including timely internal and external reporting. The Administrative personnel are responsible for office planning and management, ensuring speedy staff documentation, requests, transportation and financial payment to promote smooth day-to-day running of the organization. However, the solid foundation of our organization has been built on committed and dedicated field officers and volunteers that are focal points in the external environment. The organizational chart makes provision for the following field officers (Project, Human rights/Advocacy, WASH, Health Officer, Gender, and Child Protection) with a generic summary of roles and responsibilities. Such as; undertakes needs and baseline assessment, implementation of programmes and projects, community awareness raising and social mobilization, capacity building and empowerment of beneficiaries, monitoring, evaluation and timely reporting. The organization is also endows with highly trained, skilled and empowered volunteers that are always ready to provide their services in diversified areas to help improve vulnerable and communities raising their human potentials and rights.
