Gender-Based Violence (GBV)

Gender-based violence (GBV) includes physical, sexual, emotional and psychological, economic and educational abuse, coercion, and threats directed at an individual based on their biological sex or gender identity. GBV undermines the autonomy, dignity, health (mental and physical), and security of its victims; it also has devastating social and economic effects on communities and is a major public health problem and impediment to gender equality. Sexual violence can result in serious sexual and reproductive health consequences, such as unwanted pregnancies, unsafe abortions, sexually transmitted infections (including HIV), and traumatic fistula. Women, girls, young people, and other marginalized individuals are particularly vulnerable—indeed, one in three women globally will experience GBV during their lifetimes.

International Islamic Youth League IIYL works to strengthen response mechanisms for sexual violence in clinical settings and to prevent all forms of violence at the community level, as part of our commitment to advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights and gender equality. Our approach to preventing and addressing GBV encompasses engaging communities, including men and boys, to transform harmful gender norms; training healthcare providers and facilities to better deliver survivor-centered GBV services; and supporting improved multi-sectoral coordination of GBV prevention and response. Learn more about GBV in our language guide.

Addressing and preventing GBV, and supporting survivors, are essential to improving the health of all people. Our holistic approach centers on working with communities to address harmful gender norms, including through engaging men and boys to challenge negative notions of masculinity, promoting healthy relationships, and facilitating effective interpersonal communication and shared decision-making.

International Islamic Youth League IIYL also employs a comprehensive systems response to provide screenings, referrals, and health and social services, through healthcare systems and in communities. Working with healthcare systems, we help ensure screening and cares are incorporated into both sexual and reproductive health and rights and maternal health services. We also work with justice and judicial systems to support survivors. Programs often include education or job training components, to support the independence of women and girls who are at risk of GBV or who are survivors

Sexual & Reproductive Health & Rights (SRHR)

We employ a rights-based approach that emphasizes full, free, and informed choice regarding all aspects of sexuality and reproduction. This includes expanding access to information and services related to contraception, safe abortion and postabortion care, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, cervical cancer, and more. We fully support access to high-quality comprehensive abortion care and are committed to expanding abortion rights, equity, and access for a gender-equal world.

Across the globe, International Islamic Youth League IIYL experience has shown that in every setting, contraceptive care can be safe, effective, and affordable. International Islamic Youth League IIYL partners with governments, national health systems, policymakers, community organizations, and healthcare providers to: improve the safety, efficacy, and quality of family planning services; increase contraceptive options, including for long-acting reversible contraceptives and permanent methods; and ensure that clients are able to make informed choices. We also work to strengthen service delivery by integrating contraceptive care with other health services that women and their families need, including immunizations, screening and treatment for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, cancer screening, and maternal and obstetric care.

International Islamic Youth League IIYL works to expand access to comprehensive abortion care, including both induced abortion and postabortion care. Our goal is to ensure those women, girls and other pregnant persons, particularly young women and individuals with the least access to sexual and reproductive health services, can realize their fundamental rights and obtain high-quality, affordable, comprehensive abortion care, free from discrimination, within or near their communities. This includes advancing a self-care agenda through expanded access to medication abortion, as well as supporting comprehensive sexuality education for in- and out-of-school youth. We also partner with young feminist activists and organizations to advocate for improved laws, guidelines and procedures for comprehensive abortion care, as well as counter opposition and misinformation from anti-choice organizations.

Meaningful Youth Participation

Our approach to context-specific, youth-centered programming expands access to age-appropriate information on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR); engages communities to create an enabling environment for improving young people’s sexual and reproductive health; advocates for supportive laws and policies; and engages young people in all phases of programming.

International Islamic Youth League IIYL recognizes young people as experts in their own lives. We employ a participatory, inclusive, youth-centered approach to engage young people in all phases of programming, to ensure that our work is done with, not just for, them and responds to their needs and priorities. We define young people as ages 10 to 24, including adolescents (10 to 19) and youth (15 to 24).

Our comprehensive adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health (AYSRH) programs address social and contextual factors to effectively promote SRHR. A key focus is ensuring that adolescent- and youth-friendly services are accessible, acceptable, affordable, equitable, appropriate, and effective. One way in which we do this is by strengthening healthcare providers’ capacity for unbiased youth-friendly services.

In addition, we work with local partners to educate young people about their rights and where and how to access information and counselling on sexuality, safe sex, and a full range of SRHR services. We support young parents in caring for themselves and their children and engage with men, boys, and communities to eradicate traditional practices that harm adolescents and youth. We also facilitate young people’s advocacy with policymakers and others for their own needs and rights.
